What is NDA (National Defence Academy)?
The NDA is the first step to becoming an officer after 12th grade. It is a tri-services academy where cadets of the Army, Navy, and Air Force train together before moving to their respective academies.
Key Features:
- Eligibility: 12th pass with Physics &Maths (for Navy/Air Force), any stream for Army
- Age Limit: 16.5 to 19.5 years
- Training Location: NDA, Khadakwasla (3 years) + 1 year at respective academies
- Degree Awarded: BA, BSc, or B.Tech (JNU Affiliated)
- Exam Conducted By: UPSC (twice a year)
What is CDS (Combined Defence Services)?
CDS is for graduates who want to join the Indian Armed Forces as officers. Unlike NDA, CDS entry is post-college and leads directly to the respective training academies.

- Eligibility: Any graduate (IMA/OTA), B.Sc/B.Tech for AFA/INA
- Age Limit:
- IMA: 19–24 years
- INA: 19–22 years
- AFA: 20–24 years
- OTA (Short Service): 19–25 years
- Training Locations:
- IMA (Army), OTA (Short Service), AFA (Air Force), INA (Navy)
- Exam Conducted By: UPSC (twice a year)
