DIRECTOR IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (DIN)

A DIN is like the number of a passport or a driving licence and is meant for identification of directorships in companies. The concept of a Director Identification Number (DIN) has been introduced for the first time with the insertion of Sections 266A to 266G of Companies (Amendment) Act, 2006. As such, all the existing and intending Directors have to obtain DIN within the prescribed time-frame as notified. It is being issued by Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

The main purpose of introducing DIN was to keep a data base of the Directors of the incorporated companies and to keep complete information about the Directors so that they don’t cheat anyone and in case they do, can be traceable.

DIN is individual specific not company specific; hence, one DIN is required per director irrespective of how many companies he is managing.
