FORTUNE RELEASED LIST OF MOST POWERFUL WOMEN BASED OUTSIDE THE US

Fortune released list of most powerful women based outside the US. The list was topped by Banco Santander's Ana Botin. The 2016 list spans 19 countries and is comprised of 16% new names.

Indian’s in the list include top women bankers, namely SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya (2nd rank), ICICI head Chanda Kochhar (5th rank) and Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma (19th rank).

Top 10 women in the list are

• Ana Botin - Group Executive Chairman, Banco Santander. She is a resident of Spain.

• Arundhati Bhattacharya - Chairperson, State Bank of India. She is a resident of India.

• Isabelle Kocher - CEO, Engie. She is a resident of France.

• Chua Sock Koong - Group CEO, Singapore Telecommunications. She is a resident of Singapore.

• Chanda Kochhar - Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank. She is a resident of India.

• Alison Cooper - CEO, Imperial Brands. She is a resident of U.K.

• Guler Sabanci - Chairman, Sabancı Holding. She is a resident of Turkey.

• Ho Ching - Executive Director and CEO, Temasek. She is a resident of Singapore.

• Annika Falkengren - CEO and President, SEB Group. She is a resident of Sweden.

• Omella Barra - Co-COO, Walgreens Boots Alliance. She is a resident of U.K.

INDIA-AFGHANISTAN INKED AGREEMENTS TO ENHANCE BILATERAL COOPERATION

India and Afghanistan signed an Extradition Treaty to facilitate exchange of wanted terrorists and criminals.

The two nations also inked agreements on peaceful uses of outer space and on cooperation on civil and commercial matters.

The treaties were signed during Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani’s visit to India. He was on a visit to India from 14-15 September 2016.

In addition, during the meeting the two leaders President Ghani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought faster implementation of the trilateral agreement among Afghanistan, Iran and India. This agreement was reached in May 2016 with an aim of creating a network of regional connectivity around Iran’s Chahbahar port.

Besides, India also extended a one-billion dollar to Afghanistan for capacity and capacity building in areas like empowerment of women, education, skill development, health, energy and others. Prime Minister Modi also proposed to supply world class and easily affordable medicines from India and cooperation in solar energy through mutually agreed instruments.

INDIA BLUE WINS 2016-2017 DULEEP TROPHY

Gautam Gambhir-led India Blue won the inaugural day/night Duleep Trophy Cricket tournament held in Greater Noida.

In the final, India Blue defeated India Red, captained by Yuvraj Singh, by a massive 355 runs.

Ravinder Jadeja, who bagged 5 wickets in the second innings, finished the game with a 10-wicket haul.

Cheteshwar Pujara was named the Player of the Match.

About Duleep Trophy

The Duleep Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India between teams representing geographical zones of India.

The competition is named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji of Nawanagar.

The 2016–17 Duleep Trophy was the 55th season of the Duleep Trophy.

In June 2016, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the tournament will feature day/night matches and pink ball will be used.

The tournament was contested by three teams, namely India Red, India Blue and India Green.

RELIANCE COMMUNICATIONS AND AIRCEL TO BE MERGED TO CREATE 4TH LARGEST TELCO

Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications and Maxis Communications Berhad (MCB), promoters of Aircel, agreed to merge their wireless businesses to form the fourth-largest telecom operator in the country.

The merger is termed as the biggest consolidation deal in India's telecom sector.

Key highlights of the merger

R-Com will demerge its wireless business and transfer it to the new entity. Its standalone business will focus on the enterprise segment and data centre businesses.

Sistema will continue to hold 10 per cent in standalone R-Com.

Both R-Com and Maxis will hold 50 per cent each in the new entity.

The merged company will be one of India’s largest private sector companies. It will have an asset base of over 65000 crore rupees and net worth of 35000 crore rupees.

The entity will enjoy substantial benefits of scale driving significant revenue growth, and capex and opex synergies with a net present value of 20000 crore rupees.

The company will be managed by an independent professional team under the supervision of the board.

After completion of the merger in 2017, RCom’s overall debt will reduce by 20000 crore rupees or over 40 per cent of its debt.

Aircel’s debt will reduce by 4000 crore rupees.

The entity will have the second-largest spectrum holding amongst all operators, aggregating 448 MHz across the 850, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands.

It will enjoy enhanced business continuity through extended validity of spectrum holdings till 2033-35.

SUBRAMANIAN SWAMY HONOURED WITH TAMIL RATNA IN US

Subramanian Swamy was honoured with ‘Tamil Ratna’ by America Tamil Sangam. The America Tamil Sangam is a body of Tamil diaspora based in US.

The senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP was presented with the award in New York for his fight against corruption and work for bringing more transparency in the functioning of the government.

Previous Tamil Ratna awardees include Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, movie director Bharathi Raja, Bharatha Natyam exponent Kamala Lakshman and Srinivasa Varadhan, the winner of the Abel Prize for mathematics among others.

Subramanian Swamy

• He is an Indian politician and economist who serves as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament.

• He has served as a member of the Planning Commission of India and was a Cabinet Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government.

• Earlier in November 1978, he was member of the Group of Eminent persons and was called to Geneva, Switzerland to prepare a report of the United Nations (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)) on Economic Co-operation between Developing countries (ECDC).

• He also simplified trade procedures and formulated a new export strategy which became the forerunner of trade reform adopted subsequently.

• In 1994, he was appointed as Chairman of the Commission on Labour Standards and International Trade by former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.

• He has written on foreign affairs of India dealing largely with People's Republic of China (PRC), Pakistan and Israel.

US SIGN 38 BILLION DOLLARS DEAL WITH ISRAEL

The United States signed a 38 billion dollars deal with Israel to provide the country with military assistance over a 10-year period, from 2019 to 2028. The deal is the largest such agreement the US has ever had with any country.

Under the terms of agreement, Israel will receive 3.8 billion dollars a year from the US. At present US gives 3.1 billion dollars to Israel annually under a 10-year deal that ends in 2018.

Following 10 months of tense negotiations, the two allies finalised the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a signing ceremony in Washington. It was signed with the hope that this contribution would help in security.

HIROSHI NAKAGAWA TAKES OVER AS CHAIRMAN OF ISUZU MOTORS INDIA

Japanese automobile maker Isuzu Motors announced the appointments of Hiroshi Nakagawa as the Chairman of Isuzu Motors India (IMI) with immediate effect.

Hiroyasu Miura, the erstwhile Chairman of IMI will take over as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Isuzu Engineering Business Centre India Pvt Ltd (IEBCI) with immediate effect.

Nakagawa has been actively involved in Isuzu business division for over 20 years in key Isuzu markets.

Isuzu Motors Limited is a Japanese commercial vehicles and diesel engine manufacturing company headquartered in Tokyo.

Its principal activity is the production, marketing and sale of Isuzu commercial vehicles and diesel engines.

The company was established in 1916.

In 1934, the company fused with the carmaker and was renamed Isuzu, after the Isuzu River.

By 2009, Isuzu had produced over 21 million diesel engines, which can be found in vehicles all over the world.

Isuzu diesel engines are used by dozens of manufacturers, to include Ford Motor Company and Renault-Nissan Alliance.
