VIRAT KOHLI BECOMES FIRST INDIAN CAPTAIN TO SCORE DOUBLE CENTURY OUTSIDE INDIA

India test team captain Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score a double century outside India.

Kohli scored 200 runs against West Indies on day two of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium in North Sound.

With his double century, Kohli entered the list of visiting captains with highest scores in West Indies. The list includes name like Sir Leonard Hutton, Steve Waugh, Andrew Strauss and Ricky Ponting.

The records:

Virat Kohli is the fifth Indian captain to score a double century in a Test match after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (2013 vs England), Sunil Gavaskar (205 vs West Indies), Sachin Tendulkar (217 vs New Zealand) and MS Dhoni (224 vs Australia).

It is the highest score by an Indian skipper away from home. Mohammad Azharuddin had scored 192 against New Zealand in Auckland in 1990.

It is his highest score in first-class cricket and highest in Test cricket.

It is his highest score in the first innings as captain in West Indies. Earlier, Ricky Ponting has scored 158 in Kingston in 2008.

It is the third double hundred by a visiting captain in West Indies, after 205 by Len Hutton in Kingston in 1954 and 201 by Bob Simpson in Bridgetown in 1965.

It is the first double century for India outside the sub-continent since Wasim Jaffer's 212 in St. John's in 2006.

KERALA TOURISM WINS GOLD AT PATA AWARDS

Kerala Tourism won two Gold Gongs at the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Awards.

Kerala Tourism bagged the award in recognition of its trend setting marketing initiatives, which have given a boost to the state's profile as a must-visit destination.

The awards were in the categories of Travel Advertisement Broadcast Media and E-Newsletter, which were grabbed by the successful Visit Kerala television commercial campaign and the popular Kerala Tourism E-Newsletter, respectively.

The awards will be presented at the PATA Gold Awards Luncheon and Presentation on 9 September 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In 2015, Kerala Tourism was also awarded PATA Gold in the Heritage and Culture category for Muziris Heritage Project.

FACEBOOK'S AQUILA INTERNET DRONE COMPLETES FIRST TEST FLIGHT

Facebook Inc announced the successful completion of test flight of a solar-powered drone named Aquila.

The social media giant believes that Aquila will help to extend Internet connectivity to every corner of the planet.

The company ultimately hopes to have a fleet of Aquilas that can fly for at least three months at a time at 60000 feet and communicate with each other to deliver internet access.

Key highlights of Aquila

Aquila is a lightweight, high-altitude aircraft.

It flew at a few thousand feet for 96 minutes in Yuma, Arizona.

It has a wingspan wider than a Boeing 737.

The body of the plane is made of a carbon fiber composite.

It weighs less than 1000 pounds.

The aircraft will use new laser-beam technology to deliver fast Internet to people in a 60-mile radius.

It will transmit a signal that can be received by the antennas of small towers and dishes on the ground.

The antennas will convert the signal into Wi-Fi or 4G networks.

ANNUAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL TOMORROWLAND BEGINS IN BELGIUM

One of the biggest electronic music festivals Tomorrowland began in Boom, Belgium.

The year 2016 also marks Tomorrowland 10th edition.

More than 350000 tickets for the festival were sold out in an hour of their opening in February 2016.

About Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is one of the biggest electronic music festivals held in the world.

The first edition of the festival took place on 14 August 2005, which was organised by ID&T Belgium.

Tomorrowland has been winning the International Dance Music Awards in the category Best Music Event since 2012.

In 2015, Tomorrowland won the inaugural award from DJ Magazine for The World's No.1 Festival.

It also won the Red Bull Elektropedia Awards in the Best Festival category in the year 2011, 2012 and 2013.

BRAHMAPUTRA VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL 2016 BEGINS IN GUWAHATI

The fourth edition of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival commenced in Guwahati, Assam.

The festival pays homage to the rich culture of northeast India and is dedicated to the film fraternity of the region.

Six short films and six full-length films from northeast states like Manipur, Assam, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh will be presented at the three-day fest.

The festival is organised by Tattva Creations.

The aim of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival is to bridge the gap by bringing engaging storytellers from within and outside the region under one roof.

Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) pays homage to the rich culture of Northeast India.

The film festival is dedicated to the film fraternity of the northeast region of India.

MADHAV CHITALE COMMITTEE CONSTITUTED TO PREPARE GUIDELINES FOR DESILTATION OF RIVER GANGA

Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation constituted a committee to prepare guidelines for desiltation of river Ganga.

Madhav Chitale, an Expert Member of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has been appointed as Chairman of the committee. The tenure of the committee would be for a period of three months.

Terms of Reference (ToR) of the Committee are

• It will provide guidelines for desiltation of river Ganga from Bhimgauda (Uttarakhand) to Farakka (West Bengal).

• It will establish difference between desilting and sand mining in the river.

• It will establish need for desilting for ecology and e-flow of the river Ganga.

The other members of the four-member committee are

• Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation

• Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change

• Dr. Mukesh Sinha, Director, Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune

Background

The committee was constituted in the backdrop of Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti’s call to form a committee which will look after desiltation of river Ganga. She announced the plan of constituting the committee while chairing the 6th meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority in New Delhi on 4 July 2016.
