ROHIT KHANDELWAL BECOMES FIRST INDIAN TO WIN MISTER WORLD TITLE

India's contestant Rohit Khandelwal won the coveted Mister World 2016 title. The grand finale of Mr World 2016 was held at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre in Southport, U.K.

With this, Khandelwal has become the first Indian and Asian to win the Mr World title at the competition.

Mr World 2014 Nicklas Pedersen passed on the title to Khandelwal. He also won a cash prize of 50000 US dollar.

Puerto Rico’s Fernando Alberto Alvarez Soto was named the first runner-up and Aldo Esparza Ramirez of Mexico was named the second runner-up.

Who is Rohit Khandelwal?

Rohit Khandelwal was born on 19 August 1989 in Hyderabad.

He graduated from Aurora Degree College.

He served as ground staff for SpiceJet and technical support assistant at the Dell Computers prior to entering the modelling industry.

He made his television debut by appearing in the Episode 76 of Yeh Hai Aashiqui, an Indian television series.

He won Mr India 2015 contest held on 23 July 2015 at Club Royalty in Mumbai.

NIGERIA'S DIDI AKINYELURE WINS BBC WORLD NEWS KOMLA DUMOR AWARD

Nigerian journalist Didi Akinyelure won the BBC World Service News Komla Dumor Award for 2016.

Akinyelure is the second recipient of the award, which was established to honour Ghanaian BBC World News presenter Komla Dumor.

The Award aims to celebrate African journalism and reward exceptional talent.

Ugandan news anchor Nancy Kacungira was thewinner of the first BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.

Who is Didi Akinyelure?

Akinyelure is a prime-time news anchor in Nigeria.

She presents business news for CNBC, which broadcasts across the continent.

She has been on the CNBC Africa team since 2013.

Prior to that, she worked in the asset management finance sector in Nigeria and in the UK.

As part of her award prize, she will start a three-month placement at the BBC in London in September 2016.

Who was Komla Dumor?

Komla Afeke Dumor was a Ghanaian journalist who worked for BBC World News.

He was the main presenter of BBC World News’ programme Focus on Africa.

He started as the morning show host for Joy FM in Accra, Ghana.

He was the 2003 winner of Journalist of the Year award given by the Ghana Journalists Association.

In 2006, he joined the BBC African Service in London as host of the radio programme Network Africa.

From 2008 to 2012, he presented The World Today on the BBC World Service.

In December 2013, he was named as one of the 100 most influential Africans of 2013 by New African magazine.

At the time of his death, he was the only West African news reader on BBC World News.

He died on 18 January 2014 in his London home after a cardiac arrest, having been on air the day before.

NITI AAYOG, INTEL INDIA SIGN SOI TO START ATAL TINKERING LAB INITIATIVE FOR YOUNG INNOVATORS

The NITI Aayog signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with Intel India to start the Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) initiative as a part of its flagship programme Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).

The aim of setting up Atal Tinkering Laboratories is to build relevant skill sets among youngsters and to provide access to technology that will enable solutions.

Highlights of the Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) initiative

• These laboratories intend to impact 250000 youth with innovation skills & skills for the future across 500 communities & schools.

• The initiative will enable the creation of millions of child innovators who will bloom into young entrepreneurs, thus enabling India’s unprecedented growth.

• Intel will co-lead the creation and management of ten ATLs as State Hubs.

• Intel will support NITI Aayog in building capacities of mentors and developing linkages with Maker ecosystem for quality improvement of projects made by youth, facilitating ideation, design thinking.

• Intel will co-lead an innovation festival which reaches out to 500000 young innovators.

CHENNAI'S ADVAY RAMESH WINS GOOGLE COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD FROM ASIA

Advay Ramesh, a Class 10 student from Chennai, won the prestigious Google Community Impact Award from Asia, a theme based award part of Google Science Fair 2016.

Ramesh bagged the award for creating a device that enhances fishermen's safety and productivity.

Ramesh's FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT) hand-held terminal uses the Standard Position Services (SPS), an open service without encryption provided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, to enhance fishermen's safety and productivity at the sea.

The 14-year-old Ramesh is also among 20 finalists shortlisted to compete for a 50000 US dollar scholarship from Google.

The Google Community Impact Award recognizes a project that makes a practical difference in the innovator’s community by addressing an environmental, health or resources challenge.

What is Google Science Fair?

The Google Science Fair is an online science competition sponsored by Google, Lego, Virgin Galactic, National Geographic and Scientific American.

The first ever Google Science Fair was announced in January 2011.

The competition is open to 13- to 18-year-old students around the globe, who formulate a hypothesis, perform an experiment and present their results.

All students must have an internet connection and a free Google Account to participate, and the projects must be in English, German, Italian, Spanish or French.

Entries are judged on eight core criteria, which include the student's presentation, question, hypothesis, research, experiment, data, observations and conclusion.

The grand prize includes a National Geographic trip to the Galapagos Islands, a 50000 US dollar scholarship, and an experience at a sponsoring organization. The finalists also receive a 25000 US dollar scholarship and assorted packages from sponsoring organizations.

In 2015, the Community Impact Award was won by Lalita Prasida.

UNION CABINET APPROVES ESTABLISHMENT OF ALL INDIA INSTITUTES OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AT GORAKHPUR

The Union Cabinet gave its approval for establishment of new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The institute will be established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

Key highlights of the project

The cost of the project for establishment of the new AIIMS in Gorakhpur will be 1011 crore rupees.

The cost estimate does not include recurring costs (wages, salaries and operation, maintenance and expenses).

The recurring expenditure will be met by the respective new AIIMS from their annual budgets through Grant-in-Aid to them from Plan Budget Head of PMSSY of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The institution will have a hospital with capacity of 750 beds, which will include Emergency/Trauma Beds, AYUSH Beds, Private Beds and ICU Speciality and Super Speciality beds.

There will also be an Administration Block, AYUSH Block, Auditorium, Night Shelter, Hostels and residential facilities.

The establishment of new AIIMS will provide super specialty health care to the population.

It will also create a large pool of doctors and other health workers in this region that can be available for primary and secondary level institutions/facilities being created under National Health Mission (NHM).

This institute will also conduct research on prevalent regional diseases and other health issues and provide for better control and cure of such diseases.

Background

The setting up of AIIMS under PMSSY targets correcting the regional imbalances in availability of affordable/reliable tertiary level healthcare in the country in general.

Under this scheme, AIIMS have been established in Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Raipur, Jodhpur, Rishikesh and Patna.

Work of AIIMS at Rae Bareli is in progress.

In addition, three AIIMS in Nagpur (Maharashtra), Kalyani (West) and Mangalagiri in Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) have been sanctioned in 2015.

UNION CABINET APPROVES INCORPORATION OF SAGARMALA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company (SDC) under the Companies Act, 2013. It will be under the administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping.

SDC will be developed with an initial Authorized Share Capital of 1000 Crore rupees and a Subscribed Share Capital of 90 Crore rupees. It will provide equity support to the project Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and funding support to the residual projects under the Sagarmala Programme.

What the SDC will do?

• Implementation of the identified projects will be done mainly through private or PPP mode.

• It will provide equity support for the project Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) set up by the Ports/State/Central Ministries window.

• It will implement only those residual which cannot be funded by any other means / mode.

• SDC will Identify port-led development projects and put in place suitable risk management measures for strategic projects cutting across multiple States/Regions.

• Since the Identified projects will be undertaken by multiple agencies, SDC will also work as the nodal agency for coordination and monitoring of all the identified projects as well as other projects.

• SDC will undertake the preparation of the detailed master plans for the Coastal Economic Zones (CEZs) identified as part of the National Perspective Plan (NPP).

• It will also provide a framework for ensuring the integrated development of Indian maritime sector.

Sagarmala Project

The Sagarmala Project was launched with the approval of the Union Cabinet on 25 March 2015. It was approved with a view to achieve the broad objective of promoting port-led economic development in India.

The programme was approved in order to harness India’s 7500 km long coastline, 14500 km of potentially navigable waterways, and strategic location on key international maritime trade routes.

As part of the programme, a NPP for the comprehensive development of the coastline and maritime sector has been prepared. The NPP has identified more than 150 projects across the areas of Port Modernization & New Port Development, Port Connectivity Enhancement, Port-led Industrialization and Coastal Community Development.


ECI LAUNCHED NATIONAL ELECTORAL ROLL PURIFICATION 2016

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that launch of National Electoral Roll Purification (NERP) 2016 programme across the country.

The programme was launched to improve health of Electoral Rolls (ERs) and to optimize the Polling Station (PS) location and area across the country.

The motto of ECI for the year 2016 is No voter to be left behind.

Objectives of NERP 2016

Improving Health of ERs by inclusion of all eligible citizens in mission mode by:

ERs to be made free from errors.

Single ER entry for every eligible elector with unique Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number.

Removal of all Absent (A)/ Shifted (S)/ Dead (D) electors’ entries and Repeat Entries (REs).

Ensuring Photo Electoral Rolls (PERs) with good quality correct images of every elector confirming to ECI standards, and linking Electors with ECI by obtaining their contact details.

Standardization of Sections, PS boundaries and Location and improved PS map by:

Optimization of part boundaries with Standardization of sections using GIS technology.

Relocation of PS with in Part or in adjacent parts and Improved PS Map with part map.

PS building image and dimensioned PS room drawing with Basic Minimum Facilities (BMF) details.
